Scaniam Trick or Treat: doors, questions, points and the big screen

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Trick or Treat is a Scaniam skill game where the attendee picks one of your 2 to 4 doors, answers 1 to 5 questions drawn at random from that door, and then sees each answer's points revealed at the end. Each door has its own questions, points and wrong-answer penalty, so one door can be risky and another safe. With Score tiers, a score that wins a real prize is a Treat, and anything else is a Trick that still gives any consolation prize.

What Scaniam Trick or Treat is

Scaniam Trick or Treat is a booth game for event marketers who want attendees to think about a few questions, and to make a choice, before they win. The attendee picks a door, answers the questions behind it, and watches the points flip over one card at a time. The total score decides the ending: a Treat (a real prize) or a Trick.

Each door pays differently. A risky door can mix high-point questions with 0-point questions and take points away for a wrong answer. A safe door can give steady points for every right answer. You decide the doors, the questions, the points and the prizes.

Trick or Treat is a skill game, like Quiz / Trivia, and it is on every Scaniam plan. Rules that every booth game shares (one play per person, playing before or after the survey, the game intro screen, test runs, the Host Station) are on Scaniam booth games. Prize rules (odds, stock, consolation prizes) are on Scaniam prizes, odds and stock.

Good for, not for

  • Good for: booths that want attendees to think about a few questions and make a choice before they win, and seasonal events where you can theme the doors.
  • Not for: very short visits, or booths with no questions worth asking. Use Spin the Wheel for a game that takes seconds.

For the pitch, see the Trick or Treat game page.

The rules

Rule Detail
Doors 2 to 4 doors. Each door has a name, a one-line deal shown on the door, a color and an icon, or an image instead of the icon.
Questions per door Up to 20 questions behind each door. Each question has 2 to 6 answer options and one right answer.
Questions each player gets 1 to 5 per door, drawn at random from that door's questions. A door with fewer questions gives every player all of them.
Points per question 0 to 100 for a right answer. A 0-point question can be answered right and still score nothing.
Wrong answers Each door has Points for a wrong answer, from 0 (no penalty) to -50. A question left unanswered when the time runs out counts as wrong.
Score The points of the right answers plus the wrong-answer points, never below 0.
Treat or Trick A prize that counts as a win is a Treat. A consolation prize, a "not a win" prize or no prize is a Trick.
Score decides Only under Score tiers does the score decide Treat or Trick.
Tiers in points Score tiers for Trick or Treat are in points, not percent, up to 500 points.
The pick is final One door per play. The attendee cannot switch doors, even after a reload.
No feedback during play The attendee is not told whether an answer was right until the reveal at the end.
Time per question Optional, 0 to 120 seconds, the same for every question. 0 means no limit.
Trick messages Up to 6. Each Trick ending shows one. Different players can see different messages; one player always sees the same one.
Changes Changes you save reach players who start the game after the save. A player who already started keeps the doors and questions they started with.
Results are checked Scaniam checks that a result is genuine before a prize is given.

What the attendee sees

  1. Pick a door. Under Score tiers the line reads "Answer the questions behind it. Your score decides the ending." Under any other winning journey it reads "Answer the questions behind it, then see what you get." Each door shows its icon or image, its name, its deal and how many questions that player will get.
  2. The questions. The screen shows the door name, "question N of M", a progress bar and the options (A, B, C and so on). With a time limit, the seconds count down. After each tap the attendee sees "Answer locked in. The points are revealed at the end." If the time runs out: "Time's up. The points are revealed at the end."
  3. The reveal. After "Counting your points…", one face-down card per question flips over in turn. Each card shows the question, its points and one line: "Correct - worth N!", "Correct - but worth 0. Tricked!", "Wrong - minus N" or "Wrong - no points". The heading then shows "Your score: N".
  4. The ending. A Treat shows Treat! and "You won: [prize]". A Trick shows your Trick card title (default "Tricked!"), one of your Trick messages (default "Better luck next time.") and "You still get: [prize]" when the player gets a consolation prize.
  5. Continue. The attendee taps Continue and goes to their gift code (game after the survey) or to the survey (game before the survey). Trick or Treat shows its own ending, so there is no separate result screen.

How prizes are decided

Pick the Winning journey under Game Setup. Scaniam Trick or Treat supports the same three journeys as the other skill games. We recommend Score tiers for this game.

  • Score tiers. Each winning prize has a minimum score in points. A score that reaches a tier wins that prize, which is a Treat. A score below every tier gets the consolation prize, which is a Trick. With no consolation prize, that player gets no prize and Game Setup says "Players below N pts get nothing - add a consolation prize."
  • Everyone wins. The prize is drawn by its odds, whatever the score. A perfect score can end as a Trick and a score of 0 as a Treat.
  • Leaderboard contest. Players are ranked by score, and the top ranks win when you click Resolve & Award. Each play ends on the Trick card, with any instant gift as "You still get". See Scaniam leaderboard contests.

When you switch an event to Trick or Treat in Game Setup, Scaniam sets Score tiers for you if the event has at least one prize that is not a consolation prize, unless the event runs a leaderboard contest. The starting tiers come from what your doors can reach. With two or more winning prizes, and when every door can score points, the lowest winning prize starts at a score that every door can reach. If the prize for a score has run out, the player gets the next prize down that is still in stock, then the consolation prize. See Scaniam prizes, odds and stock.

The balance check

Under Score tiers, each open door in Game Setup shows a balance check, so you can see how your doors pay before the event:

  • "If every answer is right: lowest N, average N, best N points." (or "always N points" when every draw scores the same).
  • One line per prize: "Reaches [prize] in N% of draws." or "Never reaches [prize]."

Under the doors, Scaniam warns you when the setup will surprise players:

  • "[door] can never win a prize: even a perfect score is below every tier."
  • "Every [door] player who answers right wins [top prize] - it may run out early."
  • "No door can reach [prize]."

Without Score tiers, Game Setup shows "Pick "Score tiers" under Winning journey so the score decides Treat or Trick."

The starter game

A new event created with Trick or Treat starts switched on with an example game you replace with your own:

Starter part What it is
Door Trick "Big wins or nothing": 10 example questions, some worth 50 points and some worth 0, and -10 for a wrong answer. Each player gets 3.
Door Treat "Steady points": 10 example questions worth 10 points each, no penalty. Each player gets 3.
Prizes T-Shirt from 120 points, Sticker Pack from 30 points, both unlimited, and Candy as the consolation prize.
Look The built-in Halloween background, a pink skull door and an amber gift door.

With the starter, 3 right answers behind the Treat door win the Sticker Pack, and a high score behind the Trick door can win the T-Shirt. Game Setup shows "N example questions still in. Replace them with your own." until you replace them. You can try the same starter in Library, then Games, then Trick or Treat: the Live preview is playable, nothing is saved and no prize is real. Reset plays it again.

The big screen for a TV

Under Doors, the Big screen for a TV switch turns on a live page for a TV or laptop at your booth. When it is on, Game Setup shows Open the big screen with the page's address. When it is off, it says "Off. Plays are counted from when you turn it on and save."

Door totals count real plays from when the big screen is on (after you turn the switch on and save). Test runs never count, and door totals never show names. Design the booth screen (slides, prizes, logos) opens the booth screen editor. What the TV shows and how to design it is on Scaniam booth screen.

What happens if...

If ... Then ...
The connection drops when the attendee opens a door They see "We couldn't open that door. Check your connection and try again." and can tap a door again.
Scaniam cannot open the game for that attendee, for example the event has not started yet and it has a live registration page The attendee moves on (to the survey, or to the gift code if the survey is done) with a note, such as "The game opens at the event. Come back to play.", and still gets their gift code.
The answers do not go through "Your answers didn't go through. Check your connection." with Try again. If it still fails, the attendee moves on with "We couldn't confirm your game result. Show your gift code at the booth and staff will check."
The time runs out on a question The question counts as wrong and the door's wrong-answer points apply.
A player scores well but the prizes for that score have run out They get the next prize down that is still in stock, or the consolation prize. A consolation prize shows on the Trick card.
A door's questions cannot reach any tier Every player of that door ends on the Trick card. Game Setup warns "[door] can never win a prize".
You click Change and pick Trick or Treat again The doors reset to the example doors (see Scaniam booth games), and the winning journey to Score tiers if the event has at least one prize that is not a consolation prize and runs no leaderboard contest.
You remove your background image Players see the built-in Halloween background.

How to set up Trick or Treat

  1. Open your event from Events, click Event Settings, then Game Setup.
  2. Turn on the switch next to Game. Under Game, click Change and pick Trick or Treat. To start from a new event instead, pick Trick or Treat at the Add a game? step, or click Use in Event in Library, then Games.
  3. Under Doors, click a door to open it. Set Door name, The deal (on the door), Questions each player gets and Points for a wrong answer.
  4. Pick a Door color and a Door icon, or click Use an image instead of the icon (JPG, PNG or WebP under 3 MB).
  5. Under Questions behind this door (up to 20), edit the example questions or click Add question. Mark the right answer and set Points: from 0 to 100. Click Add option for up to 6 options.
  6. Click Add a door for a third or fourth door. Delete a door with its delete icon (a game keeps at least 2).
  7. Under the doors, set Background image, Trick card title and Trick card messages. Click Add a message for up to 6.
  8. Under Prizes, set your prizes and a consolation prize.
  9. Under Winning journey, keep Score tiers and set the points for each prize. Check the balance lines in each door.
  10. Under Options, choose When it plays, and under Trick or Treat settings set Time per question and Shuffle answer options (on by default).
  11. Click Save game config. The button shows Saved!.

If the save fails, Scaniam names the problem: "Add at least 2 doors.", "Use at most 4 doors.", "Give Door N a name.", "Add at least one question to [door].", or a question behind a door that has no text, fewer than 2 answers or no right answer. Try the game with Test Survey before the event.

Each response shows the door and score, for example "Picked Treat · scored 30 points". The event CSV has Door and Game Score columns for Trick or Treat events.

Common questions

Can an attendee switch doors after seeing the questions?

No. In Scaniam Trick or Treat the pick is final. If the attendee reloads the page and taps any door, Scaniam opens the door they already picked, with the same questions.

Does the attendee see the right answers?

No. During play the attendee only sees "Answer locked in." At the end, each card shows whether the answer was right and its points, but never the right answer.

Is Trick or Treat only for Halloween?

No. You can rename the doors, pick their colors and icons, upload your own background and write your own Trick messages. Only the built-in background picture and the example doors are Halloween themed.

Can players cheat by knowing the questions?

Each player gets a random few of the door's questions, and Scaniam checks that a result is genuine before a prize is given. A door with no more questions than it draws gives every player the same questions.
